A lab technician who took a swab from the private parts of a woman in Maharashtra as a COVID-19 test, has been sentenced to ten years in prison.

A local court heard the matter and delivered the sentence 17 months later.

The man was arrested on rape charges in July 2020.

Swab samples for Covid-19 tests are only taken from a person’s nose and throat, but he convinced the complainant that she needed further testing. The woman works in a mall. According to a PTI report, nose swabs were taken from 20 to 25 other employees at a testing center after one of the staff tested positive for coronavirus on July 24.

It was claimed that the technician took a swab sample from the woman’s vagina after taking the usual nasal and throat swabs.

After the test, the woman discussed the incident with her brother, who consulted doctors and learned that there was no such test for the coronavirus.

Thereupon, the woman went to the Badnera police station and filed a complaint, and a lawsuit was filed against the laboratory technician.

After the woman filed the complaint, the accused was arrested under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for assaulting or using criminal force against a woman with the intent of humility and rape.

In this case, a total of 12 witnesses appeared in court. After hearing both sides, the court found the accused guilty under Articles 354 and 376 of the Indian Penal Code.
