A student at the Manipal Institute of Technology was caught smuggling his girlfriend in to his hostel after security suspected his bulging suitcase.

An engineering student at the Manipal Institute of Technology in Udupi, Karnataka, was caught on Wednesday (February 2nd) trying to sneak his girlfriend into his dorm by stuffing her in a large suitcase. The student was caught after the doorman suspected the bulging suitcase and continued on his way to investigate further. Fortunately, the student who was stuffed in the suitcase wasn’t injured.

According to a report in the Times of India, the concierge asked the student why he was carrying such a large piece of luggage, and the student replied that it contained several items he had ordered online, further increasing the concierge’s suspicions. When the guard wanted to know what was in the bag, the student tried to avoid him saying that the items were delicate. However, the officer did not accept the explanation and asked for the suitcase to be opened when his girlfriend popped out.

After the incident, a video of a girl jumping out of the suitcase after security check went viral on social media. However, the video was not related to the event at the Manipal Institute of Technology. Speaking to The New Indian Express, a Manipal Higher Education Academy spokesperson said that the video was mistakenly attributed to MAHE on social media and various media outlets.

A source told TNIE that both students reside on the Manipal campus. The student was an engineering student and his girlfriend was a commerce student at the institute.

According to the TOI report, the students were expelled from the dormitory and returned to their homes.

The source also told TNIE that when COVID-19 cases started to rise in the midst of the third wave, the hostel would not allow strangers and therefore they came up with this ingenious plan because the boy wanted to spend time with his girlfriend.

After the incident, many posts were made on social media.
