The 1983 Cricket World Cup (officially the Prudential World Cup) was the 3rd edition of the ICC World Cup tournament. It was held from 9 June to 25 June 1983 in England and. Eight countries participated in the event. This was the last time the World Cup was held in England, before its migration to the subcontinent and Australia. The tournament was full of dramatic cricket right from the start. It was the year of the underdog- the first two editions had been won by the clear favourite- this one produced a sensational turnaround with 500-1 outsiders India upsetting the West Indies applecart.
The format of the tournament was 2 groups of four teams, each team playing each other twice. The top two teams from each group then advanced to the semi finals with the winners further advancing to the finals. Every game was of 60 overs with all day matches.
Kapil’s men had turned the cricket world upside down, and the lives of hundreds of millions changed forever
The Indian team reached the final defying every prediction that was made and if that was not enough, they did the unthinkable on 25th of June. Despite posting a low total on the board, Kapil Dev’s men put up a spirited show with the ball to bamboozle the title favourites in front of a capacity crowd at Lord’s. Mohinder Amarnath starred, both with bat and ball picking up three vital wickets, after making a gutsy 80-ball 26, to help India get their hands on a World Cup trophy for the first time.
“I shook my head. It’s a decision I regret still. Not for the money that could have been won but for missing out on the thrill of punting on one of the greatest upsets in sports’ history. For, a seven-hour roller-coaster ride thereafter, Kapil’s men had turned the cricket world upside down, and the lives of hundreds of millions changed forever”- Ayaz Menon
